Character Name: Dark Mousy
Series: D.N.Angel
Age: He looks 17, but is actually 400 years old.
From When?: The end of chapter 73
Inmate/Warden: Inmate
Despite being portrayed as the hero of his story, Dark is not a very good person. He is essentially ignorant of anyone else's feelings, takes whatever he wants by force, and has a bit of a temper problem. Basically, he's emotionally stunted and potentially dangerous. The barge is a good place for him to learn because it will give him the chance to exist outside of a host, with nowhere to hide if things don't go his way, and exposure to people with problems bigger than his. The theft isn't so much a problem as is the materialism and egotism that causes him to value people less than objects. He needs a change in perspective and a re-sorting of his priorities to be the sort of person that you want having their own human body.

Abilities/Powers:
Dark is an ‘immortal existence’, as he puts it. What this really means is that his origins don’t include a natural death. When the painting Black Wings was created it was made with such emotion that the painting was given a soul, which through turmoil and a bit of a botched theft split in two. In a way, Dark outside of Daisuke is a spiritual form made of magic. His magic consists mostly of his black wings, energy blasts, and occasionally cute things like summoning other painting spirits, transferring magic, and sealing or other barrier type magics. Most spellwork is done with a single feather from his wings. Additionally he is a Legendary Phantom Thief, which gives him rather god-modly powers of disguise, escape, and breaking into things. These will likely not be used too often and will certainly be limited as his techniques are never shown explicitly and a great deal of it can be attributed to “special magic stuff”.
On the barge he will keep his ability to summon wings, since they are a literal aspect of who he is as the Black Wings. Other magic will be limited to the casting of small and/or short-lived spells for barriers or the movement of power.
Personality:
Dark is selfish, possessive, conceited, chauvinistic, secretive, and at times just a real prick. But that’s just his good side. Once you get to know him he’s also cold, manipulative, ruthless and, when it suits him, downright vicious.
His end goal is to have a human body of his own. For him, this means taking over whichever Niwa he happens to be possessing at the time. In order to obtain this goal he remains emotionally distant from his host, takes every opportunity to seize control and shamelessly causes trouble. This seems to contradict his actions to rescue Daisuke the few times the boy is removed from his own body. On one level this is his possessive nature showing itself, holding tight to what he considers ‘his’. On another level, peace is an important aspect of his transformation. This is why he only emerges when his host is feeling the sort of love that makes a heart race. He needs strong emotion, but anger or anything akin to it will physically hurt his host – and consequently the body Dark wishes to have for himself.
That he thinks of his people as possessions doesn’t mean that Dark doesn’t care about them. He obviously has a lot of real affection for both Risa and Daisuke, as evidenced by his tone. He shows Risa more of his true self than he shows anyone else, and is far gentler with Daisuke than he was with Daiki or even with Daisuke at the beginning of the series. In fact it is this affection that draws him to claim people as his, just like it was the Niwa’s affection for the artwork of the Hikari that made them want to steal it.
Riku got it right the first time she saw him: Dark is a pervert. He loves women. He loves flirting with women. He loves putting on an act to make women fall in love with him. This is sexism at its root, as he refuses to fight any woman but seems to have no problem kissing someone who’s unconscious. He considers himself far too noble and is too cocky for this to present itself in any violent fashion, but he doesn’t have a whole lot of respect for the opposite sex. This is only one aspect of his manipulative nature, though: he doesn’t limit himself to pretty women when it comes to putting on an act in order to get what he wants.
In all of his dealings with his host he maintains the goal of taking over, and works to present himself as someone not entirely despicable so that they might be more amenable to the idea. At the start of the series he makes occasional comments to the effect that Daisuke should just let Dark take over all the time, but after a few issues he stops. He doesn’t stop driving the point home that the two of them are the same – one person, inseparable. In doing this he puts the idea in Daisuke’s head that Dark wants to be in control, then frames it so that it seems like more of a positive.
Though he is entirely shameless in this, he is often genuinely depressed and even hates himself for what he is and what he feels he has to do to attain his goals. He tells Risa that he is a monster, with the connotation that as a monster he cannot be truly loved. He’s shocked when she tells him she doesn’t care. It is clear that Dark wants a body not because he is a parasite and that’s how it’s supposed to be, but because he has a strong desire to live and be human and experience human things.
Wanting to go out and experience human things is part of why he takes every chance to take over Daisuke’s body. He enjoys being a phantom thief, being famous, having women swoon over him. He also doesn’t get to do it terribly often. Generally speaking he’s allowed out into the world for an hour or two to steal artwork and then shunted back into the subconscious. Dark does get lonely, and this makes him treasure his people even more. But at the same time his own self-loathing keeps him from forming true bonds most of the time – most of the people he treasures he only knows through his host’s perspective.
We get to see Dark’s cold, vicious side when he faces off against Argentine. Having one of his ‘belongings’ kidnapped and then being publicly accused of the kidnapping makes him furious, and it quickly becomes clear that he’s less concerned with bringing Risa to safety than he is with putting the hurt on Argentine. In fact, he tells her only to move away from the boy before attacking, then temporarily forgetting her. He tells Argentine that he could crush the boy, and given the look in his eyes he’s tempted. He doesn’t have mercy – he just wants Argentine’s death to be slow and painful. That’s what happens when you cross the Master Phantom Thief.
Throughout the series what is often mistaken for a hidden sense of caring is actually Dark struggling with his own confused feelings. He wants to love, but doesn’t really know how, and doesn’t think he deserves such a thing. He wants to be free, but he doesn’t want to cause too much destruction in the process. He is the sort of person with whom other people are friends, but he doesn’t feel nor understand the meaning of the relationship himself. The end result is often acts of generosity, such as saving Risa’s ass when she gets herself into trouble. This is almost a precautionary measure. He takes care to let Risa down easy, but doesn’t pay any heed to the trouble he causes Daisuke or anyone else when he flirts. He doesn’t want other people’s suffering to be his fault, but he doesn’t seem to recognize when that suffering is anything other than physical pain or pining unrequited love.
Barge Reactions:
One of the biggest adjustments Dark will have to make on the barge is the inherent breaking of the fourth wall. He will be thrust into a life where red eyes and purple hair are questioned, and he isn't widely regarded as the hottest shit since panini sandwiches. He will be emotionally crushed by this.
Assuming he eventually gets over the crushing blow to his ego, Dark will continue on the barge much as he does in his regular life. The barge is not unlike one of the many strange worlds inside of artworks from which he often has to rescue Daisuke. He doesn't care enough about anyone else to lose his cool being confused or alarmed by strange people and places.
Death will be a difficult concept for him, since his existence in the barge is so much like his existence within the Niwa family. That probably won't be an impediment to his graduation. If anything, he will be pleased not to have someone else in his mind.
Path to Redemption:
Dark is the kind of person you have to sneak up on if you want to teach him a lesson. If he gets his mind set on proving a point, no amount of logic will convince him he's wrong. You have to trick him into proving the point you're trying to make. Appealing to his ego is a good way to accomplish this.
Friendships may play a key role in his redemption as part of an effort to make him see people as people more than possessions. He does care about people, he just doesn't get many chances to realize it. He either doesn't get to spend a lot of time with people or feels that he can't because he'll put them in danger. Prolonged exposure to people will likely have a positive impact.
Deal: NA
History:
Dark is a magical being bound to the Niwa family who possesses male members of the family. These boys transform into Dark when any kind of romantic feeling causes a sufficient increase in heart rate. The same thing triggers the reverse transformation. The possession only stops when the Niwa boy gains requited love – which includes knowledge of the family secret. The Niwa family, with Dark’s help, steals works of art which possess special properties. Dark did not start this tradition – the Niwas have been art thieves for many generations, which is how Dark became bound to the family in the first place.
Long ago an artist gave his soul to create works of art so magnificent that they seemed alive. His work captured the heart of a thief, who sought to catch up every piece of the artist's soul that he bled into his work. This turned out to be a really bad idea when the thief interrupted the artist giving life to what he hoped to be his greatest work ever: The Black Wings. The magic went haywire and exploded, mixing souls and artwork and shoving it into the most convenient residences available: the two men. The Black Wings was split in two, creating the phantom thief Dark and the personification of dangerous obsession Krad.
The first of a long line of Niwa men worked along with his shiny new alter ego to steal pretty much whatever he wanted. The artwork lived on long after its body, and so was passed from person to person genetically. In his search for true life Dark created a legend, the undying Phantom Thief who could steal anything, even if he alerted the authorities beforehand. Dark enjoyed the fame and the challenge, but what he sought more than anything was a physical body of his own. In order to obtain this he requires the human owner of the body to surrender it to him - which basically only happens when Dark has a more succesful love life than the Niwa.
Before Daisuke Niwa was born there was a period during which there was no phantom thief - Dark was still aware, but could not possess the girl Niwa child that was Daisuke's mother. After Daisuke was born, the Harada twins created an issue - At first Daisuke liked Risa and Dark seemed to like Riku, but eventually Daisuke realizes he likes Riku more and Dark is charmed by Risa's obsession with trying to date him. Their love life became very strange, and it came into question whether Dark might actually be the one to succeed in this generation.
At the same time Satoshi Hiwatari was possessed by Krad, who is obsessed both with his relationship with Dark and with his alter ego. Satoshi is in charge of a special police division responsible solely for the capture of the phantom thief, despite Satoshi being only 14 - he has somehow already graduated from college and really has no business being enrolled in public school.
After many struggles between the phantom thief and the detective which result mostly in Daisuke and Satoshi being friends and Satoshi bailing the both of them out of magical-artwork-related shenanigans, Satoshi is given a special gun which will supposedly allow him to kill Dark. If he can kill Dark then Krad will also die, significantly extending Satoshi's lifespan because Krad is essentially a parasite. The gun won't hurt Daisuke, whom Satoshi is especially fond of. This seems like a win-win, so Satoshi finds Daisuke when he's changed into Dark and shoots him with the special gun, changing him back into Daisuke.
Then the writer lost interest and placed the series on indefinite hiatus, likely to never be completed.
More info here, since I may have done a terrible job of explaining some things.

No matter how high he flew, Dark could not escape this place. He was used to the feeling of being trapped, but it still left him feeling depressed. He stared sullenly at the stars that passed, thinking of the real world, where Daisuke and Risa were. He knew that Daisuke would be alright - as a human he couldn't be harmed by the weapon Krad and Satoshi had gotten their hands on. Where did they get it anyway? That gun should have lost its power a long time ago. And what would Risa think, when she never saw him again after their dance? It was for the best, anyway. She deserved someone who could be with her and make her happy, not a monster that would exist long after she was dead.
Dark sighed, an annoyed grimace forming on his face. This was so boring. He hated feeling down, especially when he couldn't do anything about it. There was no sense getting depressed about something he couldn't control. Unfortunately, the alternative was to get pissed about it. This time it was him that had been stolen, and it chaffed him something awful to be made the fool. Without anyone to challenge in order to regain his freedom he had no choice but to fume, and snap at the next person who tried to talk to him. It only made him more angry that he was loosing his cool.
Finally he couldn't stand it anymore, and he stomped away from the rail and back below deck. If he couldn't do anything but lay around and fume, then he was going to take a nap. He wasn't used to all this time spent conscious, anyway. He thought having the body to himself would be all fun and games, but it's work too. He wasn't a fan of work when it doesn't get him any attention or rare artwork.
