CHARACTER
Character Name: Dark Mousy
Age: Roughly 500 years old
Species: Painting
Canon: DNAngel
Canon Point: Volume 14, "Argentine Special"
Character Info: here
Personality:
Dark is selfish, possessive, conceited, chauvinistic, secretive, and at times just a real prick. But that’s just his good side. Once you get to know him he’s also cold, manipulative, ruthless and, when it suits him, downright vicious.

His end goal is to have a human body of his own. For him, this means taking over whichever Niwa he happens to be possessing at the time. In order to obtain this goal he remains emotionally distant from his host, takes every opportunity to seize control and shamelessly causes trouble. On the other hand, peace is an important aspect of his transformation. This is why he only emerges when his host is feeling the sort of love that makes a heart race. He needs strong emotion, but anger or anything akin to it will physically hurt his host – and consequently the body Dark wishes to have for himself.

That he thinks of his people as possessions doesn’t mean that Dark doesn’t care about them. He obviously has a lot of real affection for both Risa and Daisuke. He shows Risa more of his true self than he shows anyone else, and is far gentler with Daisuke than he was with Daiki or even with Daisuke at the beginning of the series. In fact it is this affection that draws him to claim people as his, just like it was the Niwa’s affection for the artwork of the Hikari that made them want to steal it.

Riku got it right the first time she saw him: Dark is a pervert. He loves women. He loves flirting with women. He loves putting on an act to make women fall in love with him. This is sexism at its root. Dark is the type of guy who refuses to fight a girl. This is only one aspect of his manipulative nature, though: he doesn’t limit himself to pretty women when it comes to putting on an act in order to get what he wants.

In all of his dealings with his host he maintains the goal of taking over, and works to present himself as someone not entirely despicable so that they might be more amenable to the idea. At the start of the series he makes occasional comments to the effect that Daisuke should just let Dark take over all the time, but after a few issues he stops. He doesn’t stop driving the point home that the two of them are the same – one person, inseparable. This has the advantage of making Daisuke feel that Dark is a brother, a protector, an ally.

Though he is entirely shameless in this, he is often genuinely depressed and even hates himself for what he is and what he feels he has to do to attain his goals. He tells Risa that he is a monster, with the connotation that as a monster he cannot be truly loved. He’s shocked when she tells him she doesn’t care. It is clear that Dark wants a body not because he is a parasite and that’s what he’s supposed to want, but because he has a strong desire to live and be human and experience human things. He envies humans, but while this emotion makes his more brutal counterpart Krad despise them Dark likes humans. He is, on the whole, a benevolent monster.

Wanting to go out and experience human things is part of why he takes every chance to take over Daisuke’s body. He enjoys being a phantom thief, being famous, having women swoon over him. He also doesn’t get to do it terribly often. Generally speaking he’s allowed out into the world for an hour or two to steal artwork and then shunted back into the subconscious. Dark does get lonely, and this makes him treasure his people even more. But at the same time his own self-loathing keeps him from forming true bonds most of the time – most of the people he treasures he only knows through his host’s perspective.

We get to see Dark’s cold, vicious side when he faces off against Argentine. Having one of his ‘belongings’ kidnapped and then being publicly accused of the kidnapping makes him furious, and it quickly becomes clear that he’s less concerned with bringing Risa to safety than he is with putting the hurt on Argentine. In fact, he tells her only to move away from the boy before attacking, then temporarily forgetting her. He tells Argentine that he could crush the boy, and given the look in his eyes he’s tempted. He doesn’t have mercy – he just wants Argentine’s death to be slow and painful. That’s what happens when you cross the Master Phantom Thief.

Abilities: Dark is an ‘immortal existence’, as he puts it. What this really means is that his origins don’t include a natural death. When the painting Black Wings was created it was made with such emotion that the painting was given a soul, which through turmoil and a bit of a botched theft split in two. In a way, Dark outside of Daisuke is a spiritual form made of magic. His magic consists mostly of his black wings, energy blasts, and occasionally cute things like summoning other painting spirits, transferring magic, and sealing or other barrier type magics. Most spellwork is done with a single feather from his wings. Additionally he is a Legendary Phantom Thief, which gives him rather god-modly powers of disguise, escape, and breaking into things. Much of this is likely magical in nature.

CARNIVAL
Soul Colour: Dark purple
Ideal Jobs: Ringmaster, Acquisitions, esp skullduggery
Relevant Experience: See his entire personal history and abilities. Dark is a thief, and he is an exceptionally skilled thief. More importantly, he really loves his work. Give him an opportunity to swipe something and he will turn it into a fabulous song and dance that people will talk about for years without ever actually seeing his face. He's less interested in obtaining things legitimately, but it does give him an opportunity to swipe something interesting at the same time.
Reason for Joining: Rescued captive!

Thread

Prose:
Dark stood on a branch in one of the larger trees on the outskirts of the Woods. He was only some ten feet off the ground, so it I wasn’t much of a vantage point... it just felt weird to stand on the ground staring into a forest. His black wings shifted with discomfort. He could feel the danger of this forest. But it did seem like the simplest, most obvious way out.

Did he want out, though? Sure, it was humiliating being forced to work for a fucking circus, but since he’d come here he hadn’t felt Daisuke at all. Maybe that meant one or both of them were in a whole lot of trouble. Maybe Dark was just free, with his own body that could stand up to the use of his magic, no more human holding him back, no more fateful chains.

It was too much to hope for, he knew. That was why he stood there, eyes on the forest. Even if it was true, he couldn’t help but worry for the kid whose body he shared, and for Risa. What would she do if he disappeared? She’d already shown a penchant for getting herself in trouble to get his attention.

He needed to go through the forest. He was fairly sure he couldn’t go through the forest. He didn’t really even want to go through the forest. He was at a standstill. His wings continued to rustle uneasily as he kept his gaze on the forest but his awareness all around him. One did not simply sneak up on Phantom Thief Dark.
